The hammer and the chisel are simple instruments that allow an expeditious assessment of any damage to the structural timber elements.

By judging the sound of the response obtained by striking a timber beam with a hammer, it is possible to perceive the existence of any degraded areas (cavities, cracks, etc.) in the wood. The chisel, for its part, can be used to discern the surface hardness of the wood and assess its integrity.
