Building in Rua do Rosário, Porto

Structural Inspection and Diagnosis

This 20th century building facing Ros├írio St. in Oporto, underwent a rehabilitation/strengthening intervention of the existing structural elements which took into account its specific technical, economic and architectural requirements.

In this regard, as first a step NCREP performed a set of inspection and diagnosis actions in order to characterize the structural elements and examine its state of conservation.

Through in-situ experimental tests and visual inspection it was possible to conclude that this building is in good condition, without relevant damages in structural elements, namely timber floors, stairs and roof, also as stone masonry walls.

However, in the design phase it was necessary to defined a set of structural solutions to improve the building safety, in particular on the top floor and timber trusses, both with new elements of wood, in order to harmonize with the existing structural system. Stands out also the solution with steel profiles which materializes the mezzanine structure at ground floor, following the proposed architectural design.
