Timber roofs of a Porto’s Wine warehouse, V. N. Gaia

Inspection and Diagnosis

AnInspection and Structural Diagnostics Report was carried out to a Porto’s Winewarehouse of The Fladgate Partnership to assess the state of conservation andestimate necessary rehabilitation measures. The warehouse is composed by 5modules, amounting to a total in plan area of approximately 5.500 m2,materialized by timber roofs, concrete porches and stone masonry walls.

Thebuilding features 5 timber roofs, supported on the outside walls in stonemasonry and on 4 longitudinal concrete porches, dated its construction of the40s of the XX century. After a first evaluation across a visual inspection andgeometric characterization of the entire structure, the campaign of testsperformed focused essentially on timber elements of the roofs and on theconcrete porches. Stands out the action of the Resistograph and Hygrometer, which evaluated, respectively, the internal state of preservation and the watercontent of the timber elements, and also the Sclerometer and Pacometer, whichallowed estimating the compressive strength of concrete and the localizationand diameters of its rebars.

Thecollected information allowed performing a safety assessment for verticalloads, resulting in important information relative to the level of structuralintervention that the building requires. It was concluded that was necessary tointervene to re-establish the security conditions necessary for its correctuse, in particular in the timber roofs, having for that been suggested twoalternatives of intervention. A first hypothesis proposed the replacement ofthe entire roof by a new made of glued laminated timber, having also beensuggested as alternative a structural reinforcement and local replacement inthe existing roof, complemented by monitoring plans of their behavior.
