Inspection and Diagnosis, Safety Assessment, Structural Design
NCREP developed a detailed Inspection and Diagnosis campaign aiming at providing information regarding the conservation state for material and structural elements, to be used in the Design phase.
The complexity of the work carriedout was high, due to the uncommon configuration of the existing constructive system of the building, built in the mid XIX century. Besides the typical Porto building's typology (façades and lateral walls built on stone masonry), timber floors and interior walls in mixed timber-masonry elements (so called "tabique"), the building was intervened in the 1930's, modifying its structural behaviour with the introduction of a new reinforced concrete floor and stairs.
Through a structural inspection anddiagnosis and the corresponding structural safety assessment, it was possible to observe that the reinforced concrete slab and beams exhibited moderate structural damage, where the need to strengthen those elements was depicted. For this purpose, specific strengthening solutions making use of metallic elements placed on the concrete beams, as well as a set of procedures to carry out the treatmentof corroded areas, were defined and implemented.
Finally, new timber and steel roof structures were designed to replace the existing damaged ones, optimizing the available height of the top floor.
