Identification of the dynamic behaviour of structures

By installing an accelerometer network on a structure (or other equipment for recording the structure’s motion) it is possible to determine the way a structure vibrates under a certain action, in particular its eigenfrequencies and vibration modes. This identification is performed in a totally non-destructive way; when combined with a numerical simulation model allows estimating the mechanical characteristics of the structure, its integrity and the points of structural weaknesses. Although the treatment of the results entails a great complexity, the use of this technique in the mechanical characterization of structures is becoming increasingly spread, being quite useful to calibrate numerical models. Currently, there are experimental campaigns that apply this technique to continuous monitoring of structures.
