Survey of reinforcements and assessment of its diameter and covering layer

The structural assessment of reinforced concrete elements involves, besides the mechanical characterization of the concrete and steel, the determination of the volume and distribution of the rebars inside the elements. The uncertainties associated to this data, generally justifies a three steps analysis: (1) visual detection of the rebars in the areas where it is feasible, in particular where there is detachment of the covering layer; (2) use of pacometer to detect and evaluate the diameter and spacing of the rebars and the thickness of the concrete cover; (3) carrying out of occasional surveys with removal of the concrete cover, to confirm the available data, in particular in areas where the pacometer results were not conclusive.
